A half-million Toyota Camrys just earned a trip back to the dealer because their instrument clusters can go completely blank when the car starts up, killing not just the speedometer readout but the turn signals and hazard lights too.

The recall covers 508,354 examples of the 2025 and 2026 Camry Hybrid, all equipped with a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Documents filed with NHTSA spell out a software bug that prevents the display from initializing on startup, leaving the driver staring at a dead screen where critical vehicle information should be.

No speed. No turn signal indicators. No hazard light function. No seatbelt warnings. Not even a chime to tell you the key fob is still in the car.

The screen going dark is only half the problem. Toyota’s own investigation confirmed that the malfunction also disables the exterior turn signals and hazard lights entirely. Other drivers on the road have no idea what you intend to do next.

NHTSA flagged that as an elevated crash risk, which is about as diplomatically as the agency can say “this is dangerous.”

Toyota traced the root cause to a software glitch specific to models with the smaller 7.0-inch cluster. Camrys equipped with larger displays are not part of the recall. The fix is a software update performed at the dealership, free of charge, and Toyota says it will notify affected owners by October 5.

It is a staggering number of cars for what amounts to a coding error. Nearly every Camry sold over the past two model years as a hybrid with the base gauge cluster falls under this action. That the problem can render exterior lighting inoperable, not just interior displays, elevates this from an annoyance to a genuine safety concern.

Toyota has been pushing hard to digitize its cabins across the lineup, moving away from analog gauges even in its most mainstream models. The tradeoff is exactly this kind of vulnerability. A traditional needle speedometer and incandescent turn signal relay don’t need a successful software boot sequence to function.

Owners can check whether their VIN is affected through the NHTSA recall lookup tool online. Given the volume of vehicles involved, dealer service departments may face a backlog once notifications go out. Getting ahead of the queue would be smart for anyone driving a late-model Camry Hybrid with the 7.0-inch screen who has noticed even a momentary delay in cluster startup.

Toyota has not reported any crashes or injuries tied to the defect. That is fortunate given how many cars are out there with the bug lurking in their software. Whether every affected unit has actually experienced the blank screen or whether Toyota is casting a wide net across production runs that could potentially exhibit the fault remains unclear from the filing.

The recall adds to a busy stretch for the industry. Ram recently pulled back 1.2 million 1500 pickups over a seatbelt issue, Mercedes recalled 310,000 vehicles for rollaway risk, and Ford has been issuing recall after recall for everything from reclining seats to engine fires. Software-driven problems are becoming the common thread, and the fixes keep landing on dealer service bays that are already stretched thin.
