Kia America moved 83,793 vehicles in August, cracking its all-time monthly sales record by a thin but real margin. The previous best was 83,007 units sold in August 2025, which means the new record amounts to a 1 percent year-over-year gain.

The cumulative picture is harder to dismiss. Through eight months, Kia has sold 590,377 units, up 3 percent over the same period last year and another all-time high. Retail sales through dealers hit 543,085, also a record.

Six nameplates posted their best August ever. Seltos led the charge with a 53 percent jump to 9,214 units, fueled by the arrival of the redesigned 2027 model. Carnival climbed 13 percent, while K4, Telluride, Sportage, and K5 all notched single-digit gains.

Telluride alone accounted for 12,693 sales, continuing its run as the brand’s prestige anchor.

The hybrid story is where the real momentum lives. Hybrid sales nearly doubled, up 99 percent for the month. Sportage Hybrid rose 40 percent, Sorento Hybrid 22 percent, Carnival Hybrid 15 percent.

Total electrified vehicle sales, including plug-ins and full EVs, climbed 36 percent. Year-to-date, hybrid volume has surged 111 percent and electrified sales overall are up 60 percent.

Those hybrid numbers are doing heavy lifting because the pure EV side of the ledger tells a different story. EV6 sales cratered to 712 units in August, down from 1,796 a year ago. Year-to-date, EV6 has moved just 5,429 units compared to 8,961 through August 2025.

EV9 also slipped in August, dropping from 2,679 to 1,789, though its cumulative tally of 10,474 is actually up from 9,354 last year.

The brand-new EV3, priced from $29,890, showed up in the sales chart with exactly six units. That is a launch trickle, not a flood, and Kia is betting this affordable electric SUV with up to 321 miles of range will change the math in coming months. Eric Watson, Kia’s VP of sales operations, called it “an affordable all-electric SUV option for customers entering the EV market” and said it positions the brand for a fourth consecutive annual sales record.

The Soul, once a quirky volume player, has effectively vanished. Zero units in August, just 3,480 for the year, down from 36,339 through August 2025. That is a nameplate in its final breaths.

Kia also announced 2027 Sportage ICE pricing at $28,990 and a refreshed 2027 Niro hybrid starting at $29,890. The Niro gets updated styling with Star Map lighting, a new S trim, and available Highway Driving Assist 2. The Sportage X-Line picks up a standard panoramic sunroof and power liftgate to match hybrid and plug-in hybrid trims.

What comes through in these numbers is a company running two races at once. The combustion and hybrid business is firing on every cylinder, with broad model strength and genuine consumer pull. The EV portfolio, meanwhile, is shrinking in volume even as Kia launches new entries at lower price points.

The EV3 is supposed to bridge that gap, but six units is six units. Kia’s path to a fourth straight annual record likely runs through the dealer lots where Tellurides, Sportages, and Sorentos keep disappearing. Whether the EV3 can add a new current to that stream or simply replaces the fading EV6 will define how the rest of 2026 plays out.
