A Tesla Cybercab rider in Austin, Texas climbed into the driverless pod and found something no passenger was supposed to see. The vehicle’s touchscreen was stuck displaying a virtual joystick controller, the hidden manual interface Tesla uses to move a car that has no steering wheel, no pedals, and no stalks.
The screen showed a circular joystick graphic with the word “hold” at its center, flanked by a horn button and a “Stop” button. Sliding the virtual stick appears to control steering, forward acceleration, and reverse. Recentering it likely activates regenerative braking.
The rider posted the images on X, and while they could drag the joystick around the screen, it wasn’t actually responsive to inputs. This is how you drive a car with no physical controls. Let that settle for a moment.
The Cybercab remains under active investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA is scrutinizing Tesla’s self-certification that the vehicle meets federal safety standards despite lacking every traditional human interface. Tesla put a car on public roads while the rules governing it are still being written.

Manual override systems for autonomous vehicles are nothing new. NAVYA shuttles, operated by companies like Beep, famously used an Xbox controller for human takeover situations. That always got a laugh.
But Tesla replacing a physical fallback with a touchscreen joystick raises a different kind of question. What happens when the screen freezes, the software crashes, or the vehicle needs to be moved in an emergency by someone who has never seen this interface before?
The frozen fender camera images visible on the stuck screen showed a bank of Tesla Superchargers, suggesting the manual mode was last engaged to position the Cybercab for charging. Production line checks, depot shuffling, and battery top-offs are the likely everyday use cases. But there is also the emergency scenario.
San Francisco firefighters once had to smash the window of a Cruise autonomous vehicle to stop it from rolling over a fire hose. If first responders need to move a Cybercab, a virtual joystick on a touchscreen is what they will get.
Tesla has a history of replacing physical controls with screens and software. The Model S and Model X yoke ditched turn signal stalks for buttons. Gear selection moved to a predictive algorithm backed by a touchscreen slider.
The Cybertruck made the yoke mandatory. Each step stripped away something tactile and replaced it with something digital. The Cybercab is the logical endpoint of that philosophy. There is literally nothing left to remove.
The company has said the Cybercab will sell for under $30,000 and recently had its specs surface in EPA documents. It is Tesla’s clearest bet that full autonomy can work without any human driving interface at all. The joystick exists as a concession that sometimes, it cannot.
Whether regulators will accept a touchscreen joystick as a sufficient manual backup for a vehicle carrying paying passengers on public roads is a question NHTSA has not yet answered. The rulemaking is ongoing. The Cybercabs are already rolling.
