Toyota GRMN Yaris – A More Hardcore Hot Hatch Is Coming

Published Date: February 11, 2025 - 7:12 pm. Modified: February 11, 2025 © by Jan Glovac

Toyota is preparing to unveil an even hotter version of the GR Yaris, known as the GRMN Yaris. A prototype has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring, suggesting that its debut is imminent.

Previously, Toyota launched a GRMN version of the original GR Yaris in early 2022, featuring an array of performance-focused upgrades. It came with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission, a half roll cage, front and rear mechanical limited-slip differentials (LSDs), new wheels, upgraded brakes, and Bilstein-adjustable shocks. However, it was limited to just 500 units, available exclusively in Japan.

Lightweight Materials and Aerodynamic Enhancements

The upcoming GRMN Yaris is expected to adopt a similar performance-driven approach. Japanese reports indicate that it will feature extensive weight-saving materials, such as a carbon fiber hood and a carbon roof. Additionally, the car will receive advanced aerodynamic upgrades to improve downforce and stability.

Spy shots reveal that the GRMN prototype wears a large rear wing, a customized hood with quick-release pins, and a more aggressive front bumper. It also sports aerodynamic side skirts, a fresh wheel design, and larger brake discs & calipers. Although hidden from view, the GRMN model is also likely to receive upgraded suspension components for improved handling.

Engine and Performance

Unlike other performance variants that often receive significant horsepower boosts, the previous GRMN Yaris didn’t feature additional power. The new model may follow a similar philosophy, focusing on weight reduction and handling precision rather than raw power gains. That being said, the standard 2024 GR Yaris already delivers 300 hp and 296 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque from its 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, making it a formidable competitor among hot hatches.

Transmission options will likely include:

  • 6-speed manual gearbox – a purist’s choice for ultimate driving engagement
  • 8-speed automatic transmission – a new option for those seeking faster shifts

Expected Launch and Availability

Japanese sources suggest that the Toyota GRMN Yaris could debut in March 2024. However, it is unclear whether this lightweight, track-focused hot hatch will be available globally or if it will remain a Japan-exclusive model, similar to its predecessor. Enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly waiting for Toyota to reveal more details.
