Mercedes-AMG will build just 30 units of the CLE 63 Mythos, and the latest prototype caught thrashing around the Nürburgring suggests every one of them will be worth fighting over. This thing looks furious even under camouflage.

The test car reveals a production-ready front end with organic-shaped lower air intakes, aero ducts flanking the LED headlights, and a deep front splitter that means business. The fat front fenders carry saw-tooth vents lifted straight from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS playbook, designed to bleed high-pressure air out of the wheel housings. At the rear, riveted-on fender flares give the coupe a stance that borders on absurd, though they’re likely placeholders for proper one-piece quarter panels at launch.

The details keep stacking up. AMG’s trademark square tailpipes are now arranged diagonally, echoing the old Lexus IS-F and the new Aston Martin DB12 S. The rear wing features oversized end plates, a multi-angle center section, and skeleton-style metal stanchions that look like they were designed by someone who builds race cars for a living.

Under that long hood sits something that matters far more than any aero trick: a flat-plane-crank, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. It’s an AMG-modified version of the new engine that debuted in the Mercedes S-Class, reportedly producing somewhere between 637 and 646 horsepower. That gives the Mythos roughly 200 hp more than the six-cylinder CLE 53, and it gives Mercedes-AMG something it desperately needs — credibility it lost with the C63.

The four-cylinder hybrid C63 S E Performance was a technical marvel that buyers largely rejected. The numbers on paper were impressive. The emotional connection was not.

AMG learned something from that experiment, and the Mythos is the correction. The closer you look at this car, the more it resembles a modern CLK 63 AMG Black Series — a car that has only grown in legend since its 2007 debut.

That comparison is no accident. AMG needs a halo car that reminds enthusiasts what the 63 badge is supposed to feel like, and a screaming flat-plane V8 in a two-door coupe limited to 30 examples is exactly that statement.

The Mythos isn’t just a collector’s piece designed to sit in climate-controlled garages. It’s a proving ground. Reports indicate Mercedes plans to bring V8 power back to the next-generation C63, and this engine is the obvious candidate.

The Mythos gets it first, validates it on track, and builds the narrative. Then AMG starts dropping it into sedans and SUVs where the real volume lives.

That’s the play. Use an ultra-limited Mythos halo car to rehabilitate the 63 nameplate, then spread the flat-plane V8 across the lineup where the four-cylinder hybrid failed to win hearts. It’s a familiar strategy — Ferrari did it with the LaFerrari’s hybrid tech, Porsche did it with the 918’s learnings — but for AMG, the stakes feel higher because the damage was self-inflicted.

Thirty buyers will get this car. The rest of us will get whatever AMG builds next with that engine. Both groups should be paying close attention to what’s circling the Nürburgring right now.
