A Perfect Blend of Style, Power, and Usability
The sixth-generation Nissan Skyline, known as the R30, holds a special place in automotive history. Among its models, the 2000RS and the 2000 Turbo RS stand out, powered by the FJ20E naturally aspirated engine and the FJ20ET turbocharged engine respectively. Over time, its striking design, particularly the facelifted “Iron Mask” front fascia of the later DR30 models, has made it a cult classic among car enthusiasts.

Turning Passion into a Family Dream Car
Shuhei Saito, a professional mechanic from Hokkaido, Japan, has redefined what a family car could be with his skillfully restored and customized DR30 Skyline. His journey began with a love for the 4-door version, transitioning from single life with 2-door sports cars to embracing practicality without sacrificing performance.
In a surprising twist, his current DR30 was not only a salvaged parts car but had been completely immobile before restoration. It lacked an engine and many essential components, but this did not deter Saito. Using parts sourced and fabricated by himself, along with his access to professional tools, he transformed the shell of this car into a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing family ride.

Custom Engineering for Performance
The heart of Saito’s DR30 is a meticulously rebuilt FJ20ET engine, yielding approximately 320–330 horsepower. To ensure reliability and additional power, he opted for adjustable timing components, metal gaskets, and a reinforced transmission from an R32 Skyline. Moreover, he employed a manual setup that improved airflow using a custom exhaust and turbocharger system built in-house.
One fascinating aspect of the project was using RB26 ignition coils from the R35 GT-R for direct ignition while combining components sourced from the SR20 engine series to modernize the functionality. Coupled with a carefully tuned turbo, Saito achieved a perfect blend of smooth acceleration and robust power.

To improve handling, he modified the suspension system, adapting S13 components for adjustable coilovers in the front. The huge braking power comes from S15 4-piston calipers paired with large 330mm rotors. This setup guarantees a controlled performance for both spirited drives and family trips.
Functional Yet Family-Friendly Interior
Inside, this 1984 Skyline exudes a fusion of purpose and nostalgia. The driver’s seat is an upgraded Recaro SR7 for support and comfort. Meanwhile, the passenger and rear seats maintain their original upholstery to retain the car’s retro appeal. Even a vintage Kenwood subwoofer has been installed, harking back to the 1980s car audio culture.
Vintage Interior and Custom Dashboard
The thoughtful interior upgrades stay true to the DR30’s roots while offering modern comfort.
On the dashboard, additional period-correct digital meters display vital performance parameters like fuel pressure, exhaust temperature, and turbo boost. These upgrades ensure that this is not just a show car but also a capable driver’s machine for any enthusiast.
Built to Be Driven, Built for Family
Covering every design aspect, Saito has turned his DR30 Skyline into a multi-purpose marvel. It functions as a family car, a weekend cruiser, and even a growling performance machine when needed. His craftsmanship and dedication serve as a testament to the timeless charm of vintage vehicles, providing inspiration for those balancing their passion for cars with everyday life.

A striking example of how old-school engineering meets family life in harmony.
