General Motors just gave its 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six something it has always deserved: a fuel tank big enough to match its efficiency. The 2027 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will offer a 34-gallon diesel tank that pushes the truck’s theoretical range past 900 miles on a single fill-up.
That number lands in a truck segment where the competition has essentially surrendered. The Duramax is the last diesel engine standing in the half-ton class. Ram killed the EcoDiesel, Ford dropped its 3.0-liter Power Stroke from the F-150 years ago, and GM now owns this space by default.
The new tank option suggests the company knows exactly what it has.
The math is straightforward. GM estimates the two-wheel-drive turbodiesel Silverado can reliably hit 27 mpg on the highway, with real-world drivers reporting numbers closer to 30. Multiply that by 34 gallons and you’re looking at somewhere between 918 and 1,020 miles before the gauge hits empty.
For context, Dan Edmunds once drove an EcoDiesel Ram 1500 past the 1,000-mile mark on just 33 gallons. A Duramax with a light foot and favorable conditions could match or beat that.
The engine itself carries over at 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, unchanged from the current generation. But GM didn’t leave it untouched. Revised piston and turbo vane designs, a next-generation NOx sensor, and what the company is calling “revised DEF level indicators” round out the mechanical updates.

That last item deserves scrutiny. Modern diesel DEF systems have been a reliability headache across multiple brands, so any improvement there is long overdue rather than a bonus.
What makes the range figure sting a little is the comparison it invites. The Chevy Silverado EV, fully loaded with its max-range battery, tops out at 493 miles per charge in Work Truck trim. The diesel nearly doubles that.
Comparing liquid fuel range to battery range is an apples-to-oranges exercise, sure, but buyers shopping half-ton trucks are making exactly that comparison in dealer showrooms right now.
Carrying 34 gallons of diesel means hauling roughly 241 pounds of fuel. That weight penalty is real, though it barely registers in a truck that already weighs north of 5,000 pounds. And unlike a battery pack that adds hundreds of pounds regardless of state of charge, that diesel weight disappears as you drive.
GM kept quiet about fuel economy numbers for the Silverado’s new gas V8 engines, which is rarely a sign of enthusiasm. The turbodiesel’s efficiency advantage could easily be 300 miles of range over its gasoline siblings, maybe more.
The broader play here is obvious. GM is betting that a segment of truck buyers still values the thing diesels have always done best: covering enormous distances without stopping. In a market obsessed with electrification timelines and charging infrastructure anxiety, a truck that can cross Texas twice on one tank makes its own argument.
Whether enough buyers will pay the diesel premium to keep the Duramax alive in this class remains the open question. GM is the only manufacturer still willing to find out.
