Morgan has unveiled early glimpses of its next flagship sports car, a stunning coupe that beautifully combines heritage and modern innovation.
The model blends the classic aesthetics of the Plus Six and its four-cylinder sibling, the Plus Four, with design inspiration from the celebrated Aero cars, which bowed out in 2018. One of its most striking features is a sleek, sloping tail reminiscent of the iconic Aeromax.
The Worcestershire-based automaker has confirmed that the forthcoming model utilizes an upgraded platform derived from the Plus Six’s bonded aluminum structure. True to Morgan’s tradition of blending craftsmanship with performance, this exciting addition will be powered by a BMW-sourced turbocharged inline-six engine.
As part of the transition, Morgan is marking the end of the Plus Six with the limited-edition Pinnacle, a celebratory trim limited to just 30 examples. Priced at £96,995, the Pinnacle boasts unique design cues inspired by the Pininfarina-designed Midsummer, unveiled in 2024.
Leveraging the Pinnacle offering, Morgan plans to spotlight its expanding bespoke customization program, described as offering “almost limitless” personalization options. This underscores Morgan’s commitment to elevating customer experiences while emphasizing exclusivity.
The successor to the Plus Six is set to debut later this year as a two-seat sports car with a more contemporary design. Unlike the traditional ‘wing silhouette’ that characterizes most of Morgan’s four-wheelers, this model breaks new ground and embraces a more upscale and exclusive design language.
This upcoming flagship will distinguish itself from the still-strongly-selling Plus Four, which champions the vintage styling Morgan has been refining since the introduction of the 4/4 back in 1936. Interestingly, the Plus Four remains the bestseller in Morgan’s range, greatly outselling the Plus Six at a ratio of approximately two to one.
Morgan has strategically sought to reinterpret its vintage design ethos to integrate contemporary cues. Design chief Jonathan Wells refers to this evolution as moving into “the jet age.” Drawing insights from premium projects like the limited-edition Midsummer, the company aims to build a flagship offering that’s not only high on luxury but also positioned at a price point that reflects its premium appeal.
This standout model will utilize a refined version of Morgan’s CX extruded aluminum chassis, which has proven to be both reliable and versatile. It will also retain the outgoing Plus Six’s 3.0-liter turbocharged BMW inline-six engine.
While this engine currently produces 335bhp, it has untapped potential to deliver much higher outputs. Speculations point toward a possible boost to 380bhp, pushing the car’s performance further into supercar territory.
Even at its current power level, the outgoing Plus Six already achieves exceptional performance. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds and boasts a top speed exceeding 160 mph. Any enhancement in performance metrics will firmly position the new model among segment leaders.
Shifting Focus, Embracing Change
Morgan’s Managing Director, Matthew Hole, acknowledges that the company remains devoted to its roots while exploring bold innovations. According to him, the introduction of models like the Midsummer has illuminated the demand for more projects in that direction.
Despite these advancements, Hole emphasizes that the company does not plan to integrate excessive forward-thinking technology at the expense of its analog driving experience. Instead, Morgan focuses on refining mechanical features, like ride and handling, to deliver an engaging driving experience while staying true to its heritage.
Additionally, the company is leveraging its long-standing craftsmanship in coachbuilding to achieve greater flexibility, especially in terms of exterior designs. This ensures their lineup resonates with both traditionalists and customers seeking fresh interpretations of the Morgan identity.
