Toyota is stepping up its electric vehicle game in Europe. The Urban Cruiser, a compact, all-electric SUV, joins Toyota’s lineup. Designed from the ground up, it promises to enhance Toyota’s presence in the bustling European market and diversify its all-electric offerings.
The Urban Cruiser draws inspiration from the Urban SUV Concept. This move follows the bZ4X, marking a significant phase in Toyota’s mission to provide a varied range of eco-friendly drivetrains throughout Europe. By 2026, Toyota plans to introduce 15 zero-emission vehicles, six of which will be pure electric with a dedicated platform.
The expansion includes a blend of plug-in hybrids, full hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles. This approach will gradually cut down Toyota’s emissions across the region. By 2035, the aim is to achieve a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions, aligning with the broader target of carbon neutrality by 2040 set by Toyota Motor Europe.
Stylish and Bold Design
Toyota’s Urban Cruiser stands out with its unique design. It carries an SUV’s genuine charm, emphasized by its robust lower body. With a theme of “Urban Tech,” the Cruiser presents sophisticated looks from all angles. A standout “hammerhead” front end, distinctive bumpers, and a striking rear light setup underline its contemporary appeal.
The Urban Cruiser is compact yet larger than the Yaris Cross. It measures 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. It offers a nimble turning radius of 5.2 meters. Available in 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels, it also offers a wide array of color options, including stylish bi-tone combinations.
Interior Flexibility and Comfort
Inside, the Urban Cruiser offers space and flexibility. Its extended wheelbase allows for a roomy interior with a sliding rear seat system that adjusts for more space, comparable to larger D-segment SUVs. Seats fold in a 40:20:40 split, offering adaptability for passengers or cargo.
The interior’s versatility is complemented by a clean, open design. Black and dark grey trims enhance the robust SUV appeal. Ambient lighting with 12 colors sets the mood for any journey. The driver’s seat is high, providing excellent visibility, and the low horizontal instrument panel adds to the open feel.
Varied Powertrain Choices
Two battery options are available with the Urban Cruiser, using lithium-iron phosphate technology. The FWD version hosts a 49 kWh battery, delivering 106 kW / 144 DIN hp. Another FWD option offers a 61 kWh battery with 128 kW / 174 DIN hp.
For those seeking authenticity in their SUV, there’s an all-wheel drive option. This uses a 61 kWh battery for 135 kW / 184 DIN hp. All models come with energy-saving features like a heat pump for air conditioning and manual battery pre-heating for cold weather efficiency.
All-Wheel Drive Security
Emphasizing its SUV credentials, the Urban Cruiser’s all-wheel drive enhances stability on tricky surfaces. A 48 kW rear motor provides assurance on slippery roads, offering both adventurous drives and peace of mind.
Safety is top-notch, with features like pre-collision systems, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera. A digital integration of a 10.25-inch driver’s display and a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen ensures easy navigation and connectivity.
Toyota also eases electric vehicle management with its HomeCharge facility and the MyToyota app, which assists with battery monitoring, charging schedules, and station locations.
With impressive tech and a wide range of features, the Urban Cruiser is set to redefine expectations in its class, paving the way for a sustainable and innovative future.
