Honda is marking a significant milestone—25 years of hybrid sales in the United States. The journey began with the launch of the Honda Insight in December 1999. This innovative vehicle was a groundbreaking entry, setting high standards with its impressive fuel economy ratings.
The original Honda Insight boasted an EPA rating of 61 mpg city and 70 mpg highway. These figures, although recalibrated with evolving EPA methodologies, still reflect the vehicle’s remarkable fuel efficiency. The current estimate for the 2000 Insight now stands at 49 mpg city, 61 mpg highway, and 53 mpg combined. Despite these changes, the Insight remains one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles ever produced.

Honda’s approach to design was innovative. The Insight’s aerodynamic two-seater body featured a lightweight aluminum build and partially covered rear wheels, delivering a drag coefficient of 0.25. This design was pivotal to its fuel efficiency.
