A twin-turbo BMW M2 built to slide sideways for a living has no business lining up on a drag strip. That’s exactly what makes this matchup worth watching.

The car belongs to Red Bull’s Driftbrothers team, campaigned by Elias Hountondji’s outfit and built by their 229performance workshop for the 2026 Drift Masters European Championship. It packs 1,100 horsepower and roughly 1,200 Nm of torque from a heavily reworked S58 straight-six, stripped of its factory forced induction and refitted with a Xona Rotor single turbo and a custom fresh-air antilag system. The block has been reinforced, the cooling system is oversized, and chassis bracing has been added everywhere the engineers could find room.

All of that fury goes to the rear wheels only, through a five-speed sequential gearbox. No all-wheel drive. Curb weight sits around 1,220 kg.

Standing across from it on the runway is a stock Lamborghini Huracan Performante, making roughly 640 horsepower from its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10, routed to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with launch control calibrated to deliver repeatable, violent starts. It weighs 1,482 kg, making it the heaviest entry in the test. But every one of those kilograms sits on top of a drivetrain designed to hook up and go.

Mat Watson, who arranged the whole affair, also threw a bone-stock G87 M2 into the mix. That car’s 480 horsepower and 600 Nm exist mostly to illustrate how far the drift machine has traveled from its factory origins. The deficit between the two M2s exceeds 600 horsepower.

The tension here is simple and specific. The drift M2’s entire engineering philosophy runs counter to what a drag strip demands. Every component decision, from the sequential box to the rear-drive-only layout to the antilag system, was made to sustain controlled oversteer, to keep the rear tires spinning, not hooking.

The Huracan should eat the M2 alive in the first 50 meters. Its all-wheel-drive system and launch control exist precisely for this scenario, putting power to pavement before the BMW driver can even think about managing 1,100 horsepower through two rear contact patches.

The M2’s only play is what happens after the launch. Once it’s rolling and the single turbo is fully spooled, the raw power advantage is enormous. Nearly double the Huracan’s output in a car that weighs 260 kg less. But keeping that car pointed straight with only two driven wheels and a gearbox designed for drifting is a skill test that has nothing to do with horsepower figures.

The Driftbrothers have been working with BMW M since 2021, when they ran a pair of M4 Competition drift cars on the same S58 platform. The M2 is the evolution of that program, smaller and more powerful, and it was never intended to prove anything in a straight line. Which is precisely why the straight line is where you learn the most about what the car actually is.

Whether the M2 catches the Huracan before the finish line depends entirely on how quickly the driver can transition from managing chaos to deploying it. That answer lives in a video dropping this week.
