Honda Unveils California-Only Hydrogen Fuel Cell CR-V SUV

Honda has taken the wraps off a brand new plug-in hybrid version of its popular CR-V SUV running on hydrogen fuel cell power.

Badged the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV, this green vehicle promises zero emissions motoring combined with quick home recharging capabilities.

The all-new model builds on Honda’s experience with hydrogen vehicles like the discontinued Clarity Fuel Cell sedan. However, the CR-V e:FCEV also packs a 17.7 kWh lithium battery enabling 29 miles of electric-only driving. Switching to compressed hydrogen gas extends the range to 270 miles based on EPA testing.

Power comes from a 174 hp electric motor mounted up front, drawing energy from either the wall plug or hydrogen tank.

Drivers can refill hydrogen in roughly 5 minutes, while a full recharge takes about 2.5 hours using a 240V home outlet. The car also supports bidirectional charging to power external devices.

Honda claims the next-gen fuel cell unit, co-developed with GM, is smaller, cheaper and more durable than before. The Japanese automaker assembles the model in Ohio using some Michigan-sourced components to qualify it as made in America.

Visually, the hydrogen CR-V gains some model-specific body panels and wheels, along with tweaked suspension and chassis for optimal weight distribution. Inside, occupants enjoy the latest tech like wireless smartphone integration, digital dials and a Bose sound system.

Honda plans limited volumes of just 300 units annually for lease-only in California. The decision stems from California’s leading position around hydrogen infrastructure and environmental regulations.

For context, the state currently hosts over 50 hydrogen filling stations to cater to FCEVs from Honda, Hyundai and Toyota.

The hydrogen CR-V provides Honda with a flagship demonstration of its fuel cell prowess. By complementing battery-electric cars, the automaker sees hydrogen power playing a key role in achieving its carbon neutrality goals across vehicles by 2050. The tech also holds promise for heavy commercial applications.
