Johannesburg, South Africa – BMW’s regional office here unveiled the new high-performance i5 M60 electric sedan this week as the model continues its global rollout.
The M60 represents the sportiest iteration of the 5 Series available now, slotting above the 520d diesel variant also launched recently in South Africa.
With its grey exterior paintjob, upgraded wheels and interior accents, the right-hand-drive i5 M60 brings a welcome dose of driving excitement to BMW’s electric vehicle range.
Its dual motors generate a meaty 735 horsepower, rocketing the sedan from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.
“We’re thrilled to add the i5 M60 to our local lineup,” said Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW South Africa. “With its instant torque and sharp handling, this car captures the spirit of high-performance BMWs past and present.”
On the outside, the M60 stands out with its exclusive 20-inch Style 940 M wheels and Oxid Grey metallic paint. The familiar BMW kidney grille sports a horizontal slat design with an “M” badge front and center. Aerodynamic mirror caps round out the model’s sporting credentials.
The M60’s driver-focused cockpit features carbon fiber trim, a chunky flat-bottom steering wheel with an Alcantara cover and red 12 o’clock stripe. Front passengers get treated to multi-contour seats wrapped in Merino leather. Those sitting in back enjoy the same level of luxury.
Cutting edge tech abounds as well. The latest iDrive 8 system is on hand with its curved display and crystal shift knob.
An upgraded Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound audio system provides a suitably premium listening experience.
While potent in its own right, the i5 M60 is likely just an appetizer for the upcoming M5 performance flagship. That car will push boundaries even further when it eventually arrives, BMW insiders hint.
For now though, the dual-motor i5 M60 represents a compelling combination of electric performance and luxury.
South African drivers keen to sample BMW’s high-voltage future need not wait any longer.
