BMW plans to launch an all-wheel-drive version of its popular M2 sports coupe in 2026, according to multiple reports. The new M2 xDrive model will join the rear-wheel-drive version that has been on sale since 2022.
The addition of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system aims to broaden the appeal of the M2 by enhancing traction and performance. However, it will also add significant weight – likely between 110-165 lbs.
Purists have already criticized the current M2 for weighing too much compared to its predecessor. An even heavier xDrive variant may draw further skepticism.
BMW intends to offset the weight gain by fitting more powerful engines in the M2 xDrive. Output could surge above 500 horsepower – surpassing the upcoming M2 CS model.
The extra grunt should ensure the xDrive model still feels suitably rapid despite its bulk. An automatic transmission will likely be mandatory to handle the huge torque.
The standard M2 already gets a power boost for 2025 – up by 20 hp to 473 hp. More updates will follow for 2026, including a minor styling revision. The high-performance CS enters production in late 2025 as a final hoorah for the rear-drive layout.
BMW sees strong demand for xDrive in its M3 and M4 models. An all-paw M2 unlocks more of the chassis’ potential and works well in foul weather.
Interest appears high, hence the likely 2026 launch. Purists still have a few years left to enjoy the rear-drive M2 before xDrive arrives.
